It’s a question we’re regularly asked at Pure Brides, but one that doesn’t always receive a particularly straightforward answer within the bridal industry.
Where was my wedding dress actually made?
Perhaps that’s because the reality doesn’t always fit the romantic picture that surrounds designer bridalwear. An Italian designer, an Australian bridal house or an American label might conjure up images of beautiful European ateliers and dresses being lovingly created in the country where the brand was founded.
But that’s not necessarily how the modern bridal industry works.
The truth is that many of the world’s best-known bridal designers manufacture their gowns in China and other Asian countries, regardless of where their collections are designed.
And there’s absolutely nothing inherently wrong with that.
At Pure Brides, we believe in open, honest and transparent communication. We’d much rather answer the questions our brides are genuinely asking than preserve an image that doesn’t tell the whole story.
So let’s talk about where designer wedding dresses are actually made, why so many established bridal brands choose to manufacture in China, and what that really means for the quality and price of your gown.
Designed in One Country, Made in Another
There are three different things worth understanding when looking at a designer wedding dress:
- Brand origin: Where the bridal company was established or is based.
- Design: Where the collections are conceived and developed.
- Manufacturing: Where the dress itself is actually produced.
These aren’t necessarily the same place.
An Australian bridal brand, for example, might develop its collections in Australia but work with specialist manufacturers in Asia to bring those designs to life.
This approach is common throughout the wider fashion industry, including luxury fashion. It allows designers to focus on their creative direction while working with manufacturing partners who have the specialist equipment, workforce and experience needed to produce their collections.
Which Wedding Dress Designers Manufacture in China?
Some very familiar names within international bridalwear manufacture their gowns overseas.
American bridal house Allure Bridals openly confirms that its gowns are primarily manufactured in China and Myanmar.
Maggie Sottero has publicly discussed its longstanding manufacturing relationships in Asia, while Justin Alexander has previously identified production in China, Vietnam and Myanmar.
These are established designer bridal houses whose gowns are stocked in boutiques around the world.
It’s also important to distinguish between an original designer wedding dress manufactured overseas and an unauthorised copy of a designer gown.
A genuine designer gown made in China is still an original designer gown. Its place of manufacture doesn’t change the identity of the brand behind it.
Manufacturing arrangements can vary between designers, collections and individual gowns, so it’s always worth checking directly if a particular country of origin matters to you.
Why Do So Many Bridal Designers Manufacture in China?
There is a common assumption that manufacturing in China is simply about producing something as cheaply as possible.
Cost is certainly part of any commercial manufacturing decision, but that explanation overlooks the considerable expertise that China has developed in specialist garment production.
Wedding dresses can be remarkably complex garments.
Depending on the design, a gown might involve structured internal corsetry, multiple layers of fabric, carefully placed lace, intricate embroidery, hand-applied embellishments and detailed finishing.
Producing those designs consistently requires specialist skills, equipment, materials and experienced production teams.
China has developed extensive textile and garment manufacturing networks that allow designers to access these capabilities at scale, often at a more competitive production cost than manufacturing the equivalent garment in certain other countries.
For many bridal designers, it’s a practical combination of expertise, production capacity and cost efficiency.
Does Made in China Mean Lower Quality?
No. But equally, being manufactured in China doesn’t automatically guarantee that a wedding dress is beautifully made.
The country of manufacture alone is not a reliable measure of quality.
What matters is the designer’s specification, the fabrics and components used, the construction techniques, the skill of the people producing the garment and the standards of quality control applied throughout the process.
Two gowns manufactured in the same country can be entirely different in their structure, materials, finishing and price.
A better way to assess the quality of a wedding dress is to look at the garment itself. Consider the construction of the bodice, the quality and placement of embellishments, how the gown sits on the body, its internal support and how well the design has been executed.
A beautifully constructed wedding dress doesn’t become less beautifully constructed simply because its label says Made in China.
Are Any Designer Wedding Dresses Made in Europe?
Absolutely.
Not every bridal designer follows the same manufacturing model.
Ukrainian bridal house Milla Nova, for example, has developed substantial in-house production facilities in Ukraine. Its approach to manufacturing is an important part of the brand’s heritage and identity.
Other designers choose to manufacture in the UK and elsewhere in Europe, using either their own ateliers or specialist production partners.
There are advantages to different approaches, and manufacturing arrangements can evolve as businesses grow.
For a bride, it means there is a genuine choice between designers with different production models.
Why Can UK-Made Wedding Dresses Be More Expensive?
Manufacturing in the UK can involve higher labour, premises and operating costs than production in some overseas manufacturing centres.
Smaller production volumes and labour-intensive techniques may also affect the final price.
That means a UK-manufactured wedding dress can cost considerably more to produce than a comparable gown made elsewhere, although it isn’t an automatic rule.
For some brides, supporting UK manufacturing or choosing a designer with a particular production approach is an important part of their purchasing decision.
For others, the design, fit, craftsmanship or available budget will take priority.
Neither approach is wrong.
If My Wedding Dress Is Made in China, Why Does It Still Cost £2,000?
Because the cost of a designer wedding dress isn’t simply the cost of assembling it.
Its retail price reflects numerous elements, including design and collection development, fabrics, specialist construction, embellishments, production, quality control, shipping and the designer’s operating costs.
When purchasing through an authorised bridal boutique, the retail price also supports the specialist shopping experience, including the opportunity to try on gowns, receive expert styling advice and have your order managed by the retailer.
Of course, not every £2,000 wedding dress offers exactly the same quality or value.
The important point is that knowing where a gown was manufactured doesn’t, on its own, tell you what it should cost.

Where Are Pure Brides’ Wedding Dresses Made?
Our collection includes gowns from international designer brands with different manufacturing arrangements, including wedding dresses manufactured in China and gowns produced elsewhere.
We don’t believe there’s any reason to disguise that.
We select our designers and collections for their design, construction, quality, fit and the value they offer our brides, rather than choosing or rejecting a gown solely because of the country in which it was manufactured.
If you’d like to know where a particular dress was made, we’re happy to help establish that information with its designer.
Equally, if you’re specifically looking for a wedding dress manufactured in the UK, Europe or another particular country, it’s a perfectly reasonable preference to have.
So, Does It Really Matter Where Your Wedding Dress Is Made?
It can.
If local manufacturing, ethical sourcing or supply-chain transparency are important considerations for you, the country and circumstances of production are relevant questions to ask.
But manufacturing location and garment quality are not interchangeable.
A beautifully constructed designer wedding dress can be produced in China, Ukraine, the UK or elsewhere. The important thing is understanding what you’re buying and feeling confident in your choice.
At Pure Brides, we’d always rather give you an honest answer than tell you what we think you might prefer to hear.
And knowing where your wedding dress came from shouldn’t make the moment you fall in love with it any less special.
