From the day you order your dress to the day you collect it fully altered and ready to wear, allow a minimum of nine to twelve months in total. Most designer dresses take four to six months to produce. Alterations take a further ten weeks. Add a buffer for peace of mind and you arrive at around twelve months as the ideal starting point.

Why does it take so long?
This is the question we hear most often, usually from brides who assumed the process would work a bit like buying a normal dress. It does not, and understanding why makes the timeline feel much less daunting.
When you order a wedding dress from a bridal showroom, you are placing an order for a dress to be made specifically for you. It is not taken off a rail and posted. It goes into a production queue with a designer, often based in Europe or further afield, who is making hundreds of dresses simultaneously, each to individual measurements and specifications. That takes time, and it cannot be rushed without compromising quality.
Once your dress arrives, it needs to be fitted to your exact body. Even where measurements are close to a standard size, the nuances of how a dress sits, moves, and feels on your specific frame almost always require professional alteration. That process has its own timeline too.
Put the two together with a sensible buffer, and twelve months is genuinely what a relaxed, enjoyable dress journey looks like.
The timeline, stage by stage
The ideal time to start shopping
Twelve months before your wedding date is the sweet spot. At this point, every dress in the current season's collection will be in the showroom. You will have full choice, no pressure, and enough time to enjoy the process rather than rush through it. You can take your time deciding, order with complete confidence, and still have a comfortable buffer built into every stage that follows.
Designer production lead times
Most of our designers need between four and six months to produce your dress from the point of order. This window accounts for the production run, quality control, and international shipping. For designers whose work involves particularly intricate detail, such as hand-applied embellishment, complex lacework, or heavily beaded construction, lead times can extend to six to eight months. If you would like any bespoke modifications to your dress at the point of ordering, this can sometimes extend the timeline further, though we work hard to ensure your dress arrives within six months wherever possible.
Your alterations appointments
Once your dress arrives, your alterations journey begins. For a standard alteration covering the bust, waist, hip and length, you will typically have two or three fitting appointments spread across ten weeks. Your first fitting will be around ten weeks before your wedding date, and your final fitting, when you collect your dress ready to wear, is usually ten to fourteen days before the big day. This gives us enough time to make any last tweaks and ensures your dress fits you exactly as it should.
Your peace-of-mind buffer
We always recommend building in a few extra weeks beyond what the timeline strictly requires. Production runs occasionally experience small delays. Sometimes a fitting reveals something that needs a little more attention. Life gets busy. A buffer means that none of these things become a source of stress. They are simply absorbed into a timeline that was designed with room to breathe.
What if my wedding is sooner than twelve months away?
First things first: do not panic. We help brides in shorter timeframes regularly, and there are real options available. But we will always be honest with you about what those options involve.
If you have around six to nine months before your wedding, a made-to-order dress is still very much possible for most of our designers. It is a tighter timeline, but a workable one with a good selection to choose from.
If you have fewer than six months, and particularly if you are down to three months or less, your options become more specific. The most straightforward route is our Off The Peg range: dresses that are available to take home sooner because they are purchased as shown, rather than made to order. The selection is smaller than our main collection, but there are genuinely beautiful options in there and some brides find the immediacy of it quite liberating.
The other option for a short timeline is a rush order. Some of our designers offer this, which prioritises your dress in the production queue to ensure it arrives in time. This comes with an additional fee and, importantly, cannot always be guaranteed. We will always tell you clearly whether a rush order is available for the specific dress you want, and whether we are confident it is a safe option for your timeline. We will not simply take your order and hope for the best.

The push back we hear all the time
We want to address something we hear all the time in our showroom, because it is one of the most common reasons brides end up with less choice and more stress than they needed.
A lot of brides tell us they waited to start shopping because they did not feel ready. They wanted to lose a bit of weight first, or they did not feel their best, or they thought they should have more of the wedding planned before they thought about the dress. We completely understand why.
But here is what we have learned from years of doing this: waiting until you are at your goal weight to start shopping is one of the most limiting things you can do for yourself. Not because your goal is not achievable, but because it puts your dress journey on hold unnecessarily, and it changes the way you see yourself in every dress you try.

The truth is that alterations are extraordinarily capable. A skilled seamstress can comfortably take a dress down by two dress sizes, and sometimes more, depending on the construction.
