One of the most common things we hear from brides is: "I wish I'd come sooner." The wedding dress timeline catches a surprising number of people off guard, and it's not because they weren't organised. It's because nobody tells you how it actually works.

So here it is, honestly and in plain terms.

The Realistic Dress Timeline

Most designer wedding dresses are not held in stock. They are made to order, direct from the designer, and that takes time. Here's what the timeline typically looks like:

• Designer lead time: around 6 months from order to delivery at our showroom
• Alterations: 3 months (2–3 fittings spaced a few weeks apart)
• Final collection: ideally 1–2 weeks before the wedding

Add those together and you need around 9 months at a minimum, which is why we recommend starting your search 12–18 months before your wedding date. Not because you'll take that long to decide, but because it gives you a genuinely stress-free build-up and removes all the pressure from the process.

What If You Have Less Time?

Shorter timeline? Don't panic. We have three options that work beautifully:

1. Designers with faster lead times. Some of our designers can turn orders around in 10–12 weeks. We'll always tell you which designers can accommodate your date.

2. Rush orders. Most designers offer a rush service for an additional fee. It's not ideal, but it works, and it's less stressful than it sounds.

3. Buy out of the collection. This is the most underrated option. If the dress you're trying on fits beautifully and you love it exactly as it is, you can buy it and take it home the same day. Our collection dresses are cared for meticulously, and a good seamstress will have it looking flawless for your wedding.

When Do Alterations Start?

We recommend beginning alterations around 3–4 months before your wedding. Starting too early means your body might change slightly before the day (completely normal), and starting too late creates unnecessary stress for your seamstress and for you.

Most brides need 2–3 fittings. The first is a pin-up appointment where the seamstress assesses the work needed. The second checks the adjustments. The third is a final collection appointment, ideally 1–2 weeks before the wedding, where everything is perfect and you take your dress home.

A Note on Weight Changes

We're asked about this constantly, so let's be straightforward: dresses can be taken in more easily than they can be let out. We always order the size closest to your current measurements, and we keep a note of the measurements taken on the day you order. If you're planning to lose weight before the wedding, we'll factor in a small allowance, but we won't order several sizes down, as this creates more alteration work and risk.
