Choosing your wedding dress is one of the most memorable parts of getting engaged, and one of the most misunderstood. Some brides arrive at their first appointment with a Pinterest board and a vague sense of panic. That is completely normal.

Since we opened in 2005, we have noticed that the brides who have the best experience are the ones who arrive prepared but open-minded. This guide is everything we tell brides before their first appointment.

Step 1: Know your wedding before you know your dress

Your venue can be a useful starting point. A strapless ballgown in a tiny country church reads very differently to the same dress at a grand estate. You do not need every wedding detail settled before you visit, but it helps to think about:

• Indoor or outdoor ceremony?

• Formal, relaxed, or somewhere in between?

• Time of year, and what that means for comfort

• Any practical requirements (stairs, dancing, travel between venues)

Your venue helps set the tone, but how you want to feel matters just as much.

Step 2: Set a realistic budget before you fall in love

This is the conversation that can feel awkward, but having it early makes everything easier. At Pure Brides, our made-to-order wedding dresses range from £1,300 to £3,500, with the majority of our gowns between £1,600 and £2,000. Gowns you can buy directly from our collection start at £800.

Allow £150 to £500 for alterations, plus separately charged delivery and storage and any veil, shoes or accessories you choose. Our pricing guide explains the full budget and payment options.

Be honest with your stylist about the amount you are comfortable spending, including those extras. That helps us choose dresses you can genuinely consider and talk through the options without an uncomfortable surprise.

Step 3: Understand silhouettes before you arrive

Silhouette is the shape of the dress. Everything else, fabric, embellishment, neckline, comes second. The five main silhouettes are:

• A-line, fitted at the waist, flares gently to the floor. A shape many brides enjoy trying.

• Fit-and-flare / Mermaid, hugs the body from chest to knee, then flares dramatically. Statement and sensual.

• Ball gown, fitted bodice, full dramatic skirt. The classic fairytale.

• Sheath / Column, straight and sleek, falls close to the body. Modern and minimal.

• Empire waist, seam sits just below the bust, flows from there. An option to explore for a flowing, relaxed look.

Do not dismiss a silhouette based on photos. Your stylist can help you explore the shapes that interest you and suggest something unexpected too. You do not have to work through every silhouette before you can choose.

Step 4: Choose your showroom carefully

Not all showrooms are the same. The experience of your appointment matters enormously. Look for a showroom that:

• Offers a private, dedicated appointment (not a busy showroom where you share space)

• Has a stylist who asks questions before pulling dresses

• Stocks a range that fits your aesthetic and budget

• Is transparent about delivery timelines, alteration costs, and what is included

Step 5: Be open on the day

It is common to fall in love with a dress that is different from the one you arrived expecting to love. It might be a silhouette you dismissed. It might be a colour you had not considered. It might have details you never would have chosen from a photo.

The magic of the showroom appointment is this: you cannot know how a dress will feel until you are standing in it. The best thing you can bring to your appointment is an open mind. Bring your approximate wedding date, a comfortable budget and the people whose opinions matter to your decision too. If you find your dress at your first appointment, you are allowed to say yes. You are equally allowed to take more time.
